Song Sleuth is a powerful app that transforms your iPhone or iPad into a bird song analysis tool, catering to the 200 most commonly heard land birds in North America. Developed in collaboration with renowned bird expert and illustrator David Sibley, and created by Wildlife Acoustics, this app allows you to record bird songs, compare them to known species, access research to learn more about bird songs, and even suggests matching species.
This app is not only suitable for beginners but also offers features for intermediate and advanced birders. Intermediate birders can benefit from the identification hints and the opportunity to study example recordings included in the app, while advanced birders can utilize the recording feature for further study.
Before downloading the app, it is important to note its capabilities and limitations. The Song Sleuth Auto-ID feature provides suggested matches, but it is not flawless. The final identification ultimately relies on your judgment. The app is designed to be interactive and enjoyable, encouraging a learning experience. Please familiarize yourself with the following information:
- The app only identifies bird songs and distinct calls characteristic of a species, not simple calls, chips, or scolds.
- Birds mimicking other birds (such as Thrashers and Mockingbirds) are not recognized by the app.
- An ideal recording should capture a single bird singing. Background noise or other birds may confuse the app, but tools are provided to improve results by trimming and filtering recordings.
- The app performs best outdoors with live birds rather than pre-recorded sounds. It also automatically selects the birds likely to be present in your area at the current time of year, so make sure your chosen birds are available in the SPECIES LIST.
SONG SLEUTH FACILITATES BIRD IDENTIFICATION THROUGH SONG
To identify a singing bird, simply press the record button upon hearing its song. The app begins recording a few seconds prior to your press using the device's built-in microphone. Tap the record button again when the song ends, and Song Sleuth promptly displays the three most likely species. To assist you in determining the correct bird, you can listen to your recording, compare it to example recordings of the likely matches, and examine their side-by-side spectrograms.
SAVE, VIEW, LISTEN TO, AND SHARE RECORDINGS
All recordings are saved in the RECORDING LIST, allowing you to view the spectrogram, listen to the recording (with adjustable speed), add text notes, or check the GPS location. You can trim recordings or filter the frequency range to eliminate extraneous sounds. Additionally, you can share your recordings with other Song Sleuth users via text messaging or email.
COMPLETE DAVID SIBLEY BIRD REFERENCE INFORMATION
The app includes a comprehensive David Sibley Bird Reference section that provides further insights into each species. This reference features Sibley's illustrations, detailed descriptions of birds and their songs, zoomable range maps, and a bar chart indicating the likelihood of each bird's presence in your area throughout the year based on Sibley's extensive bird database.
EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF EXAMPLE RECORDINGS
A team of well-known nature recordists, led by Lang Elliot, has curated over 1,000 world-class recording examples of the included bird species. You can immerse yourself in all the vocalizations made by each species or compare spectrograms between your own recordings and examples from other species.
VISUALIZE YOUR RECORDING LOCATIONS
Recording locations can be viewed on satellite or road maps within the app or transferred to a computer and viewed using Google Earth. Please be aware that continuous use of GPS in the background can significantly reduce battery life.
